Danish Travelers

Danish Travelers
These are descendants of the first immigrants who came into the country from the 16th century on. References to the Tatere (a pejorative term) are found in Danish literature, especially in the writings of Steen Steensen Blicher. After World War II, the government stopped the children of the Travelers from living in caravans and closed such sites as there were. Very few persons (probably less than 100) would identify themselves as Travelers in Denmark today, although some estimates place the number between 4,500 and 6,000.
