Wallachia

Wallachia
A province of Romania. The first record of Gypsies in Wallachia dates from around 1360 when a document records the transfer of slaves. Gypsies were among those who later suffered the cruelties of Vlad IV, Prince of Wallachia, better known today as Dracula. It is said that he had many of them boiled alive, burned, or hanged. Slavery was abolished in Wallachia in 1856.
