Women
   In general, women have held a subsidiary position in Romany society while often being the decision-making partner within a marriage. The mockerdi rules of hygiene mean women are seen as unclean after childbirth and during the monthly period. Their clothes always have to be washed separately from those of men. In recent years, a number of women have come to the fore as writers and political activists, including Katarina Taikon and the European MP Livia Jaroka.
