- Boswell, Sylvester Gordon
(fl. 19th-20th centuries).
England. Soldier and author. He was born in the large Gypsy camp on the North Shore in Blackpool, the 11th son of Trafalgar Boswell. He served in World War I in the Royal Veterinary Corps. He then married and traveled across the British Isles, later settling in Lincolnshire, near Spalding. Boswell was a close friend of members of the Gypsy Lore Society. He succeeded in saving and expanding the threatened Appleby Fair. In 1970 The Book of Boswell, his autobiography, was published from a transcript of a tape recording made by him. It contains a lively account of his life in the army and on the roads.
