Brussels Declaration

Brussels Declaration
(1996)
A roundtable on the Roma/Gypsies was held in the European Parliament in Brussels on 12 July 1996, attended by representatives from the major Romany organizations and those working with Gypsies. The declaration adopted by the participants called for recognition of the Romani language and way of life in the school system. It also asked for special attention to be paid to creating employment possibilities for Gypsies, as well as health care. The Gypsy organizations said they needed support and asked for the international bodies in Europe to each appoint someone as an official representative of the Romany people.
