Buffalo

Buffalo
(Bubalusbubalis)
The Asian buffalo played an important part in the migration of the Romanies from India to Europe. Many Romanies were brought by the Arabs as captives from India to serve as herdsmen in Mesopotamia and from there to the coast of the Mediterranean. Gypsies were photographed and painted with buffalo in the 19th century in Rumelia and Transylvania. It is likely that they had accompanied herds of buffalo from Turkey into the Balkans under the Ottoman Empire.
