Carinthia

Carinthia
Now a province of Austria; previously (1276-1918) part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Gypsies are mentioned in the area for the first time in 1692 at Villach. There was a small Gypsy population of Romanies and Sinti in the period up to World War II. Many of them were transported to Lackenbach internment camp, and others were put on a train heading in the direction of Tschen-stochau. It is possible that they never reached Tschenstochau as the route passed near Auschwitz. Plans are under way to erect a memorial in Villach to the victims of the Nazi regime.
