Estonia

Estonia
Estimated Gypsy population: 1,000 (mainly immigrants after 1945). The first record of a Gypsy in the territory of present-day Estonia dates from 1533 when the presence of at least two Gypsies in Tallinn was noted. Estonia was under the rule of various countries until 1918, and their laws would have applied. Numbers have never been high, and during the Nazi period, the German occupiers murdered almost all the Gypsies in 1941-1943. The dead included all the Lajenge Roma, a distinct clan with their own dialect of Romani. The Estonian writer Tuglas Friedbert is of Romany origin.
