Flamenco

Flamenco
A form of song and dance that emerged in the south of Spain in the 19th century. It is considered to be the result of a combination of Gypsy, Moorish, and Andalusian dance and music. There may be some traces of the Indian kathak style of dance. Gypsies are the prime performers of flamenco, which has spread from Andalusia to the rest of Spain. The Spanish word flamenco means "Flemish"-that is, "exotic." The Presencia Gitana research team has listed 240 Gypsy singers in Spain from 1749 to the age of the flamenco, while Bernard Leblon in his book Gypsies and Flamenco gives details of 200 and lists 100 further names. This dictionary has entries for some 40 of the best known from the beginning of the 20th century on.
