Indian Origin

Indian Origin
Some references to Indian origin are made in the early accounts of Gypsies in Europe. This was then forgotten both by Gypsies and non-Gypsies and replaced by the theory that they came from Egypt. However, investigations into the Romani language origins showed that it came from northern India and had been brought to Europe by the Gypsies. A small number of writers have recently denied the Indian origin and claim that the Gypsies are Europeans who acquired the language through contact with Indian merchants.
Many Gypsies are actively aware of the Indian connection. They like to watch Indian films and play the music of these films, while some even have statuettes of Indian gods in their houses. The Teatr Romen in Moscow includes translations of Indian plays in its repertoire. Some contemporary writers - in particular, poets-have introduced Hindi words into their works. In India itself, the connection has been recognized by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the two Chandigarh Festivals, and the activities of the Indian Institute of Romani Studies.
