Iraq
The 1976 census recorded 5,519 "Gypsies" (presumably Nawwar) and 2,569 Karach (indigenous commercial nomads) but the real figure is perhaps 10 times this. In 1979 the government granted citizenship to all the Gypsies provided they knew Arabic and had a trade. Saddam Hussein settled several hundred in Abu Ghraib and Qamaliya near Baghdad, where they came into conflict with the locals for selling alcohol. After the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003, the local population forced most of the Gypsies to leave their homes in the capital.
