Leimanis, Janis
(1886-1954)
   Latvia. Translator, writer, and civil rights activist. Leimanis devoted his life to organizing and providing aid to the Roma. From 1915, he worked alongside Romany refugees helping with welfare and taking care of their cultural needs. Involved in collecting the literary heritage of Gypsies in Latvia, in 1931 he established the society Ciganu Draugs (Friends of the Gypsies), an Orthodox Christian organization. In 1933 he translated the Gospel of John, the Lord's Prayer, and the 10 Commandments, and in 1939 he published the book Cigani Latvjas mezzos un lakos [Gypsies of the Forests and Lakes of Latvia]. During World War II, he served the Romany people on behalf of the Orthodox Church. He worked as a leader and tried to help the Roma to escape the concentration camps. After the war, until his death, he continued to take part in the ministry among the Roma.
