Maria Theresa

Maria Theresa
(1717-1780)
Hungary. Empress of Austria-Hungary (1740-1780). From 1758, she announced a series of decrees with the intention of turning the Gypsies into Ujmagyar, "New Hungarians." Government-built huts replaced tents, while travel and horse-dealing were forbidden. Gypsy children were taken away, often by force, to be fostered by Hungarians. Her son Joseph II continued her policies.
