Modon

Modon
   Greece. Town with a Gypsy settlement of 300 huts in 1483-1486. This number dropped to 100 in 1497, and by the time the Turks took Modon in 1500, most of the inhabitants had fled to escape their advance; in 1519, only 30 occupied huts remained. The Gypsies living there were shoemakers. Their fate is unknown. There is no trace of the arrival of any Gypsy shoemakers in the West, and the trade is generally considered unclean by today's Gypsies as it involves working with the skins of dead animals.
