Moldova
   Estimated Gypsy population: 22,500. The official Gypsy population (based on the Soviet 1989 census) was 11,517, of whom 85 percent had Romani as their mother tongue. It occupies part of the territory known as Bessarabia and belonged to Russia from 1812 to 1917 and to Romania from 1917 to 1940. From 1945 to 1991, the greater part of the territory was the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, and it is now an independent state. A collection of oral literature from the region made by Georgi Kantea was one of the few publications in Romani to emerge in the Soviet Union after 1945.
