Rishi, W. R.
(1917-2002)
   India. Interpreter in the diplomatic service. He spent some time during his service in Europe studying the Romanies. He attended several congresses and conferences and was a strong link between the Romanies in Europe and their motherland India. After retiring and returning to the Punjab, he set up the Indian Institute of Romani Studies and edited the journal Roma, as well as organizing the two Chandigarh Festivals. In the 1990s, he founded a Gypsy museum in Chandigarh, the Nehru Romano Kher (Gypsy House). His publications include two Romani dictionaries, a Romani-Punjabi phrase book, and Roma: The Punjabi Emigrants and India. He was elected honorary president of the International Romani Union in 1978.
