Roma Nation Day

Roma Nation Day
   (Romano Dives)
The first World Romany Congress chose 8 April-the day it opened in 1971-to be celebrated by all Gypsy communities as a national day. It was at first sporadically commemorated. For example, in 1993 the Cidinipe Roma (Gypsy Association) of Zagreb held a formal meeting in the Hotel Intercontinental. In recent years, there has been a growth in celebrations, including adopting the Indian custom of throwing flowers into a river, first used in 2002 in London when the booking of a hall had to be canceled as earmarked funds were diverted to helping victims of floods in India.
