Sampson, John

Sampson, John
(1862-1931)
England. Librarian and scholar. He worked at Liverpool University from 1892 until 1928. With the help of Dora Yates, he compiled the comprehensive study The Dialect of the Gypsies of Wales (1926), the result of his collaboration with the family of Abraham Wood. In 1894, he had met Edward Wood, a harpist who spoke Romani fluently, and he extended his research during a stay at Abergynolwyn. Together with Yates, he recorded folktales and songs of the language and spent many hours with the descendants of Abraham Wood, specifically in the company of violinist Matthew Wood. He translated some 50 verses of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (a tentmaker who may well have been a Romany) into Welsh Romani, with the aid of D. Macalister. Many of his articles were published in the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society.
