Sicily

Sicily
The earliest definitive reference to Gypsies on the island dates from 1485 and refers to a horse dealer named Michele Petta. The first Gypsies had probably arrived some years earlier and from the Balkans by sea rather than from the mainland of Italy. In 1521 Duke Giovanni came with a group of followers and a safe conduct pass from Charles V. This party had previously been in Spain and passed down through Italy. For some time, the nomadic Gypsies enjoyed a limited form of self-government under their leaders. During the Fascist period, some Gypsy families from Italy were deported to Sicily. The island also has a population of non-Romany Travelers known as Camminanti.
