Smith, George

Smith, George
England. 19th-century preacher. He wanted to settle the Gypsies and saw the Gypsy way of life as requiring reform through education and improved sanitary conditions. His books on the subject were Gipsy Life: Being an Account of Our Gipsies and Their Children, with Suggestions for Their Improvement (1880) and the antiromantic view of Gypsy life in I've Been a-Gipsying. The Moveable Dwellings Bills, which he tried to promote in Parliament, failed to be adopted.
