Smith, Rodney
(1860-1947)
   England. Evangelist. Son of Cornelius Smith. Born in East Anglia and known as "Gipsy" Smith, he was a Methodist preacher who could stir a crowd of 10,000 by his speechmaking and attracted popularity with his vocal recordings of hymns. He wrote many religious pamphlets and became a Member of the (Order of the) British Empire. His brother, Ezekiel, worked with the Railway Mission for many years and wrote hymns, and his son, Hanley, was a Methodist minister at Sutton Coldfield. His autobiography, written in 1902, Gipsy Smith: His Life and Work, was published by the Religious Tract Society.
