- (1935-1944)Netherlands. A Gypsy girl whose picture, peering through the door of a cattle wagon, has symbolized in many books the deportations to concentration camps during the Nazi period. Originally thought to be Jewish, she has recently been identified as a Romany. She was taken to Auschwitz on 19 May 1944 and gassed two months later. Dutch television made a film about her short life.
