Stereotypes

Stereotypes
We find in literature and in the popular mind many stereotypes of Gypsies. Miguel de Cervantes was one of the first to introduce the theme of Gypsies stealing a child, in his novel La Gitanilla. They teach her to dance and sing, but in her heart she remains a Spaniard. At the end of the novel, she is restored to her family and married to her Spanish lover. Beautiful and handsome Gypsies appear in plays, novels, and operas, for example, Georges Bizet's Carmen and D. H. Lawrence's The Virgin and the Gypsy.
