Caravan

Caravan
The horse-drawn living caravan was not invented by the Gypsies, but was rapidly adopted by them in the 19th century. It first appeared in France and northern Europe about 1800. The earliest picture of a caravan in England dates from 1804. In 1817 Vincent Van Gogh painted Gypsy caravans in France. There are a number of different types, such as the Reading wagon. The horse-drawn caravan is called a vardo in the Romani language, a word earlier used for a more primitive type of cart. Caravans today are trailers or recreational vehicles.
