Chaplin, Charles

Chaplin, Charles
(1889-1977)
England. Film star. His best films included The Great Dictator and Limelight. In his autobiography, he wrote that his mother was half-Gypsy and that his grandmother's maiden name was Smith. According to other sources, she was called Mary Ann Terry, and yet a further possibility is that his maternal grandfather Charles Frederick Hill, a shoemaker, was an Irish Traveler. Chaplin's biographer, Joyce Milton, felt that he was well aware of his heritage and that his tramp character recalled the image of the eternal Romany wanderer.
