Hungary. Est. 1996. Director: Dimitrina Petrova. An autonomous nongovernmental human rights organization in Budapest, Hungary, governed by a nine-member board to monitor and defend the human rights of Romanies in Europe. Initial funding came from the Open Society Institute. The ERRC publishes the quarterly magazine Roma Rights and has produced several reports on conditions for the Roma in various countries. It has assisted Roma from many countries to bring their cases to national and international courts. For example, in February 2006 it lodged an allegation with the European Court of Human Rights that police in Romania had used excessive force when evicting four members of the Pandeles family from their fruit stall in the market in Targu Frumos. The police wore masks and carried Kalashnikov rifles. In May 2005 the regional Court of Appeal in Romania had dismissed a complaint by the family, prompting this appeal to the European Court.
