Appleby Fair

Appleby Fair
Traditional horse fair in the north of England dating back to 1685, attended nowadays mainly by Gypsies and tourists. Attempts were made by local people to ban it in the 1960s and the Boswells - a respected Romani family-set up a defense committee to save the fair. In 2001 the fair was suspended because of foot and mouth disease. It takes place from the second Wednesday in June. Moving the popular Derby horse race from midweek to the same weekend to suit television audiences has produced a clash of interests. Most Gypsies seem to have opted for Appleby, and in 2003 some 10,000 Gypsies and other Travelers attended.
