Baltzar, Veijo
(1942- )
   Finland. Author. As a child he shared a tiny cottage with his horse-dealer father, mother, and nine sisters and brothers. He describes Gypsy life and culture from inside his own group in his first novel Polttava tie [Burning Road], published in 1968. This work was translated into Swedish. The second novel Verikihlat [The Blood Engagement], published the following year, describes the consequences of a vendetta, while the third, Mari (1973), is the story of a woman's role in Gypsy society. His latest book is Phuro [Old Man, 2000]. He is also a talented painter. Baltzar was the prime mover in the setting up of the International Romani Writers Association in 2002.
