Shakespeare, William

Shakespeare, William
(1564-1616)
England. Playwright. By Shakespeare's time, Gypsies were well known throughout England and the playwright could make references to them in his plays. He sometimes calls them "Egyptians" and sometimes Gypsies. In Othello (first performed in 1604), Desdemona talks of a handkerchief that "an Egyptian gave to my mother." It has been suggested that the name of the character Caliban in The Tempest comes from the Romani word kaliben meaning "blackness."
