Smith, Jasper Derby
(1921-2003)
   England. Singer. He was born in a caravan on Epsom Downs, as was his father, born on Derby Day. Smith was a well-known folk singer who made recordings and sang on radio and television. He was a founder member of the Gypsy Council in the 1960s and campaigned for caravan sites in Kent and Surrey. After a 10-year battle, he persuaded the Epsom Council to reopen in 1983 the Cox's Lane site, of which he became the first warden. He is featured on the CD My Father Is King of the Gypsies (1999) and two Topic records-Songs of the Open Road (1975) and The Travelling Songster (1977).
