Swedish Travelers

Swedish Travelers
The 1922 census in Sweden recorded 1,500 Tattare; since then, there has not been an official count. It is thought by some experts that a substantial number of Romanies stayed in Sweden after the expulsion order of 1748 and merged with the local nomadic population, forming the group now called Tattare (a pejorative term) or Resande (Travelers). The Swedish Travelers today speak a language with Swedish grammar and many words borrowed from Romani. They call this language Chivi or Rommani. In recent years, they have set up a self-help organization and many now call themselves "resande Romer" (traveling Romanies).
