Pushkin, Aleksandr
(1799-1837)
   Russia. Writer. His lyric poem The Gypsies took three years to write and was completed in 1827, depicting the Romanies of Bessarabia as ideal representatives of a natural state of human society. While celebrating the freedom of the Gypsy way of life, the poem also describes a fateful union between a Gypsy and a non-Gypsy. This inspired Mikhail Lermontov's 1829 poem The Gypsies and was later turned into a play-with moderate success-by the Moscow Teatr Romen.
