Quinquilleros

Quinquilleros
(Quinquis)
Estimated number: 150,000. The Quinquilleros (Spanish for "tinkers") were seminomadic in Spain until the 20th century, trading from village to village. Some think they are of German origin, as many are blond and blue-eyed. Another theory traces their origin to landless Castilian peasants. Until the 1950s they were completely nomadic, but punitive laws barring nomadism-with the penalty of from six months to five years in prison or forced settlement-have caused them to settle. Some 85 percent now live in urban slums. They prefer to be called Merceros (Haberdashers).
