   Alongside the Forum of the Americas for Diversity and Plurality, the Roma organized their own meeting in March 2001. Representatives attended from several Romany organizations, including those of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador, as well as Sa Roma from the United States, the American Romani Union, Romano Lil from Canada, and the Western Canadian Romani Alliance. They issued a declaration on behalf of four million Roma in the Americas asking for recognition as a people with full rights rather than as an ethnic minority.
