Romanestan

Romanestan
(Land of the Romanies)
The name given to a planned Gypsy homeland in the 1930s on the lines of the Zionist movement's vision at that time of creating a Jewish state. The idea was first proposed by the kings of the Kwiek dynasty in Poland. World War II put an end to these dreams. The idea of a Gypsy state was revived after 1945 by Vaida Voevod III, but nowadays most Gypsies would perhaps follow the thoughts of the Canadian Gypsy writer Ronald Lee, who has said, "Romanestan is where my two feet stand."
